Vodacom works with Famoco to ensure biometric identification of customers through secure devices

Vodacom

Our valued customer

Vodacom is Africa’s leading mobile communications company. Providing phones, messagings, internet and converged services since 1994, the company now has more than 55 million users. Thanks to its large network of agents, Vodacom can provides users with SIM cards all over the continent.

Vodacom operational challenges

According to Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) in 2019, there was an urgent need to strengthen the SIM card acquisition system to regulate the market and protect Tanzanian citizens. Thereafter, the telecom regulator introduced with the government a new law requiring biometric identification of SIM card holders before 2020. To comply with this regulation, Vodacom had to find and deploy before 2020 a device with specific features:

Fingerprint reader: This feature was essential for Vodacom because subscribers’ identities would be verified thanks to their fingerprints stored in the databases of NIDA, the authority providing ID cards in Tanzania.

Advanced security: Names, addresses, ID numbers and fingerprints are highly confidential data that must not be leaked from NIDA’s database. It was mandatory for Vodacom to adopt a solution that will not send metadata to third-party servers.

Remote control: Due to short deadlines imposed by the TCRA, Vodacom needed a solution that could be deployed quickly and remotely managed.
